How Rituals Can Enhance Your Writing

Writing can be a daunting task. However, you can make it more enjoyable and look forward to it by preceding it with a heart-warming ritual.

Author Naomi Epel shares in her Toolkit for Writers that “Jack Kerouac used to light a candle to start each writing session and blow it out when he was through. Willa Cather read a passage from the Bible. Somerset Maugham put on a special hat.”

Rituals create useful triggers that allow us to begin a challenging task with greater enthusiasm. I love rituals that infuse beauty into my day – like lighting candles with my favorite scent or playing some of my favorite music quietly in the background as I start to write.

This week, enhance your writing time by creating rituals that delight and inspire you, and just notice how much more productive and creative your writing becomes! It is likely that by the end of the week, you may feel like the man in the Nine of Cups tarot card shown below who feels so delighted and satisfied with the achievements displayed behind him.
